Our History

Tanzania's Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) is a nonprofit organization. We have been affiliated with the global network of Women since 1963 i.e. the World YWCA, which is in over 125 countries worldwide serving over 25 million women and girls.

The work of World YWCA began in 1855 and was formally established as World YWCA in 1894, making the YWCA the oldest voluntary ecumenical women’s movement in the world.

In 1959 the first Branch of the YWCA in Tanzania was established, in Moshi. YWCA of Tanzania was registered as a national Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) under Society Ordinance (SO) registration number SO 4815 on 24th July 1969.

The YWCA of Tanzania was incorporated under the Trustee’s Incorporation Ordinance on 22nd February 1974.
