Said Salim Bakhresa & Company Limited (SSB) is the flagship company of the Bakhresa Group. This entity’s business activities are divided into three divisions: grain milling, transport, and Inland Container Depot (also known as dry port).
Grain Milling
SSB successfully turned around various wheat, rice, and maize mills acquired through the Tanzanian Presidential Parastatal Sector Reform Commission’s Privatisation Programme over the years. SSB currently has the highest capacity for wheat milling and storage in East Africa.
All of our three milling facilities in Dar es Salaam are strategically located for easy access to road and rail networks and are close to the Dar es Salaam port. In addition to the wheat mills, SSB owns four state-of-the-art wheat storage facilities, one in each mill and one near the Dar es Salaam port, with a total storage capacity of 220,000 tonnes.
SSB, with the initial capacity of 750 tonnes per day, invested in the fully automated Buhler technology and it increased the wheat milling capacity to 3,250 tonnes per day in 2021. SSB also acquired automated loading systems to increase efficiency.
We consistently provide high-quality products to our customers. The ‘Azam’ wheat flour brand, manufactured by SSB, is the most popular wheat flour brand in Tanzania. The product line caters to the diverse needs of customers, both for home baking and professional bakeries.
SSB is the leading exporter of flour and by-products to Kenya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and it also exports to the Middle East and Vietnam.
Transport
Operating under Azam Transport, the division caters to the captive needs of SSB in transporting wheat and other imported goods as well as flour products to the customers in the country. Furthermore, it also transports wheat to the group mills in the neighbouring countries.
The fleet of around 480 vehicles consists of semi-trailers, 10-tonnes lorries, fully covered trailers, low loaders and so on.
Azam Transport’s central workshop is fully equipped with service bays, rebuild rooms, trailer fabrication and paint shops including its own warehouses which can store different type of cargos.
Logistics
AICD was established in 2009 to cater to the captive needs of the group and to offer services to the public with a storage capacity of about 2,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Containers). It is fully equipped with Reach stackers, Empty container handlers and related machines for efficient service. Apart from storing imported containers, AICD also has a Container Freight Station (CFS) to export commodities of various clients including those of SSB, complemented with storage and packing facilities.
